IRL Gallery is pleased to present NEW WORKS, a solo exhibition by Joe Henry Baker.
Baker (b. 1989) is a Brooklyn based artist from London, England. In his ethereal works, Joe Henry Baker uses color and texture to explore light and movement in abstract form. Working alla prima, a delicate dance between chance and control, Baker fills his works with intricate and numinous details and brings a unique blend of elements to his craft.
Baker works primarily on canvas and foam boards using dyes, acrylic, and epoxy, always utilizing a neutral and subdued color palette. Through his use of dyes and acrylic, which is applied to the backs of his canvases with an inside-out technique, Baker relinquishes some control. His inside-out approach not only results in pieces with captivating visual depth but also introduces an enigmatic quality, leaving traces of hidden allure on the reverse side. In other pieces, layers of paint applied with industrial rollers create a scarred and kaleidoscopic effect. Joe Henry Baker’s woodwork, coupled with his exploration of diverse mediums (including insulation boards as canvases) imbue his paintings with a sculptural dimension - bridging the gap between painting and sculpture, like a harmonious fusion of form and substance.
Some of Baker’s recent exhibitions include the Novosibirsk Triennial, Russia, The Painting Show, East Hampton, Bending Time, IRL Gallery, New York, and The Ocean Show, Gallery Petite, New York.
